Another day in Paradise

First off, this morning we went to see the "Angel Tree", a live oak off the beaten track. It's called an angel tree because its limbs rise upward, and then, when too big and heavy they come back and touch the earth to re-root themselves and rise back up. This particular one is about 65 feet high and 37 feet in circumference. And is about 300 years old.

It's covered in Spanish moss and resurrection ferns. The live oak is the state tree of Georgia and if you have one on your property, you can't cut or trim it without an arborist present. They take their tree VERY seriously.

We left Charleston and headed to Beaufort. It is a lovely smaller town with southern architecture galore. So many lovely homes, so rich in history. Also, the home of author Pat Conroy, and where the movies of his books "The Prince of Tides" and "The Great Santini were filmed. It is also home to many celebrities.

And we ended the day at Jekyll Island in Georgia. I now know how the one percent live. We are staying at a resort built for the likes of the Vanderbilts, Rockefellers, J.P. Morgan and John Jacob Astor in the early 1900s. So beautiful and original. We walked around the grounds after dinner in the "grand dining room". It was designed after the dining room on the Titanic.
We were served an exquisite salad, wonderful entree of pork loin and a decadent chocolate something for dessert. I kinda like how the other half lives. I would have probably been more comfortable with a hot dog..........but what the hey.

Also, although it may be too much information for some........found myself in my first "co-ed" bathroom. I think the men were nearly as shocked as we women. I never looked at the door........it said restroom. Who knew?
I have shin splints and sore feet, but a full heart and brain overflowing with stories. Tomorrow, we have a half day free so can play on the beach or visit the turtle sanctuary. Probably not enough hours in the day to do or see it all.
